Look!: Bookcases for Toy Storage

We took this photo of our toy shelf at home and thought how it made more sense to use a bookcase to store our son's toys, rather than a toy box.

Using a toy box seemed to encourage more messiness than order since toys were usually dumped out of the box. We decided to display his toys, using the Ikea Robin bookcase, once he was tall enough to be able to reach most of the shelves.

Placing his toys on a shelf encourages our son to put things back where he got them from and there is a certain sense of pride for him in seeing his toys arranged just so.

What we really like about this idea is that when he's older, we already have a bookcase for his room as well.

What nifty storage solutions do you have that are a bit out of the ordinary?

This can be a great idea ....but I would urge you to bolt the shelves to the wall.....if you check the consumer product safety commission site there have been hundreds of children seriously hurt and even killed when shelving units fall on the children sometimes stopping their breathing before and adult can lift it off of them..children have a bben know to "climb up" even if they can reach an item from the floor.....it looks like a fun activity to them

Oooh I love that chair in the picture (and how the toys are arranged just so)!

Pogren - I'm glad you bought that up, as it is a safety hazard many parents need to be aware of. We do have our bookcases bolted.

Jet'set - I actually found that at a local garage sale for $10 and the guy selling them had two of them.

ZMama- Thanks! The chair is actually a gift, and part of a set. It's vintage -- and our friend who gave it to us says it's Herman Miller, but we haven't been able to document that.
