All shoes come off when you enter our home. But even for people who don't abide by this rule, the colder weather means wet, snowy shoes. Though we're pretty happy with our little
$12.99 shoe shelf from Target right now, we predict an upgrade in the future. When that time comes, we'll probably go with
this rack from Williams Sonoma.
We like that it has a removable steel tray for that melted snow. It also has slots for your umbrellas- though most of ours are way too short and little to fit.
What about you- does your family take their shoes off at home all year round? Or just on the messy, winter days?
hmmm... at first glance that items looks suspiciously like a repurposed changing table... upon further inspection, though i can see that the demnsions are different - it's not as deep or tall as a standard changing table and it's got the cut-outs on one end of the shelves for umbrellas and such. but still, with a bit of crafting skill one could easily turn a changing table into a similar shoe shelf item... aren't people always wondering what to do with them after the baby no longer needs it?

we're shoes off people. started 'cause we were taking our shoes off when there was snow or wetness outside. when we moved we agreed to be a shoeless household, and we're loving it, way less dirt being dragged around and across rugs. we still feel awkward asking guests to take their shoes off (more so when it's people we don't know all that well), so we need to find a nice bench with baskets underneath it that we can use for shoe storage inside the door and hopefully that will be a nice 'hint' to guests.

We're shoeless at home, too, and we also need a new solution. The Container Store has a nice little cubby-hole style one that I'm hoping will fit in our entry closet (I've got to get the measuring tape out this weekend). My husband has huge feet (and hence, huge shoes), so finding the right shelving is a project.

Oh boy. Here goes this debate again.
We are "shoes off". Unless a guest is just stepping in onto the linolium. One happy thing about winter time and snow is that people around here don't seem to think it's as weird to take their shoes off. Plus they are usually wearing socks.

shoes off in our house, but we're not nazis about it. the challenge with an open rack like the one above (and the ikea one we currently have) is that we have totally ruined the wall - it's all scuffed and marked up. I am thinking of buying this or something like it: http://www.crateandbarrel.com/family.aspx?c=995&f=24569&q=bench&fromLocation=Search&DIMID=400001&SearchPage=1
it's a storage bench with two slots for large baskets. yes, shoes get more jumbled; but it's neater outside.

We live in the south so we don't have snow, but mud, sand, and dirt. We are definitely "shoes off" people. Keeps the house much cleaner. We keep a big galvanized bucket at the door for shoes.
I don't feel it's appropriate to ask guests to remove their shoes, some people aren't comfortable with that. But I do love that some people feel comfortable enough in my home that they do it automatically, as if they were in their own home.

We've loved the Leksvik show rack and bench from Ikea. You can pretty easily add a DIY cushion to the top to make it more comfy and it's only $69.99. Sturdy.

With my husband a doctor working only in the hospital we need to block all the germs we can. Unfortunately his specialty still tends toward wearing street clothes (for absolutely no reason) so a shoe rack is the least we can do. The cream carpet thanks us, too. I'd actually love to keep all the shoes on the porch and out of the house entirely but can't find anything that would protect them from our condo's spider population.
