Schiphol Airport BabyCare Lounge

Travel for the youngest hipster. August is Escapes month at AT and we're staring down our first ever vacation with baby but the flight and airport downtime has got us scared. Design and architecture to the rescue...

The Schiphol Airport (in Amsterdam) offers the amenities of the BabyCare Lounge, a joint project developed by the airport and Nutricia, a Dutch baby food company, and designed by MV Architects.

It's an executive lounge for parents and their babies between the ages of 0-3. The Lounge features 7 circular cabins partitioned by sheer curtains. A crib is centered within each cabin, surrounded by booth seating for the parents. Lights in the lounge are dimmed for sleeping babies, with individual reading lights for parents.

These folks thought of everything. A projector beams colored lights onto the ceiling above the crib to entertain baby. There also is a baby changing area, baby bath area and a microwave for heating food.

We think this is a wonderful idea and all major airports should follow suit. The BabyCare Lounge is open everyday from 6AM to 10PM and it's free!

See more photos here. We think this is one of the instances that the actual Lounge turned out better than the concept drawings.

Thanks, Lin!

Schiphol airport (and probably the Dutch in general) are way ahead of the curve. My dad likes to tell me that there were changing tables in the men's washrooms there 30 years ago...when he changed my diaper during a stopover.

I love this airport - it is one of the best places ever to pick up really great design magazines.
